Load Shedding or Energy Crisis

Electric energy is of utmost importance for the survival of modern life. The prosperity of a country is directly linked to the supply of energy electricity is needed in every sector of modern life. The working at railways, hospitals, business centers, entirely depends on electricity. Without electricity, our farms and industry will stop production. Our houses, trade centers, roads, schools and colleges will turn into graveyards. It is unfortunate that the production of such a vital thing is insufficient in Pakistan. The production of electricity is far less than the growing needs of our farms, industries, mills and factories. The population of our country is growing at a very rapid rate. The production of electricity is far less to meet the increasing needs of our future. The result is that we have to resort to load shedding in the country.

The load shedding has affected our country badly. It has disturbed our social, economic and cultural life badly. The industry and business in the country come to a halt during the prolonged hours of load shedding. The hospitals and medical educational centres suffer a lot. The business centres are plunged into darkness. The traffic on roads is disturbed badly. Everything suffers a jolt. The whole stream of life stops. Such a thing is not possible if we have sufficient supply of power.

We do not have sufficient supply of power due to the following reasons. ‘

First: We generate electricity from water, Oil, coal and gas. Water is the cheapest source of producing electricity. We have failed to build Kala Bagh Dam. Had it been built, the power supply would have been in plentiful and at the same time, it would have been cheap.

Second: The electricity generated by coal, gas and oil is very costly. The electricity produced by these elements is called thermal power. The setting up of the thermal power station is highly expensive for a developing country, like ours. The electricity supplied by thermal stations is not affordable for the consumers. It is not even suitable for the competitive industry of the country.

Third: We can produce electricity by nuclear energy. Nuclear power stations are not easy to set up. The nuclear reactors are very costly. The western countries utilise nuclear Energy as a major source of energy. In France, 80% of energy is produced by Nuclear Sectors. This is not possible in Pakistan.

We suffer from the shortage of electricity due to the following reasons also:

A. The demand for electricity increases due to the electrification of Villages. The new housing colonies also need it for domestic use. This has increased the demand of electricity

B. The use of electricity increases in summer. The use of air conditioners is increasing every year. The consumption of electricity increases as compared with its generation.

C. The measures to save energy have badly failed. The business centres, hotels, roads and streets are lite up during night hours. People use electricity as generously as possible. The entire nation suffers from indiscipline. All lights are always “on” in the houses.

We can fight against energy crisis by adopting the following measures.

1.    The generation of electricity can be increased by setting up more power stations. We should build more dams to store water in order to produce electricity at cheap rates.

2.    Nuclear energy should be used as a major source of energy.

3.    The government should undertake research to find ways and means to generate more power from cheap sources. Solar energy can be used as a main source of energy.

4.    A campaign on electronic media should be started to save energy by all means. The masses should be made aware of the true nature of power crisis.

5.    All business centres should be closed after eight o clock at night. Marriages should be held during daytime only. In this way, we can save a lot of energy.

 

Importance of English in Modern Age

English is an old language. It came into the subcontinent India with the English rulers. Since then, the people of the subcontinent have been under the influence of English Language. It was Sir Syed Ahmad Khan who urged the Muslims to study English. His efforts in this context are praiseworthy. Under his advice, the Muslims learnt English and began to compete with the Hindus in every field of life. Had they not learnt English, they would have remained backwards. The importance of English in the modern world can be studied under the following topics:

English is almost an international language. It is spoken and read in almost every country of the world. It has linked various parts of the world and has promoted understanding among people of different countries. Its knowledge is essential for the promotion of international understanding. Pakistan is a country where people love to speak and study in their mother tongue. They like to speak Punjabi, Urdu, Sindhi Balochi and Pushto. But still, it’s not possible in Pakistan to convert subject books into the native languages. English is a language which can foster unity among the people of four provinces.

English has become a language of knowledge and learning. All our scientific and technical knowledge is present in this language. It deals with commerce and trade. All our foreign trade is done through this language. The knowledge of medicine, engineering, technology, surgery and military equipment communicated to us in this language.

The best material of education and literature is found in English. No other the language of the world gives us standard terminology and symbols in various branches of science and technology. Knowledge of English is necessary for getting employment at home and abroad. English has played a very important role In our struggle for independence. All the activities in this respect were carried through the medium of English Language.

It is very hard to do away with English. It has its roots very deep in our society now. It has been an official language for more than two centuries in the sub-continent India. It is used in the working of our executive and judiciary. It is taught in our schools and colleges and universities. The doctors, engineers, teachers and other educated people use this language for communication of ideas nationally and internationally. Our educated people have great love for it. The importance of Urdu language cannot be underrated, but it is still in its infancy. It cannot compete with English as regards its vocabulary and scope. We can say that the future of English in Pakistan is quite safe. Yet we cannot do away with it.

Importance of Discipline

 

Discipline means to do a thing in an orderly manner. It is strict obedience to certain rules and regulations. A great discipline is found in the working of the universe. Our stars, earth, moon and sun all obey the will of God and move in a set pattern. The seasons come and go in an orderly manner. The flowers and fruit on the plants and trees come out at their regular time. The rivers and the seas are also punctual in their movement. If they become irregular in their function, they are bound to create disorder in the universe.

Discipline is required in every field of life. Our beloved leader Quaid-e-Azam has strongly advocated the cause of discipline. He says that the progress of a nation lies in following the principles of Unity, Faith and Discipline. Our religion Islam also urges us to foster unity and discipline in our ranks.

First, comes the importance of self discipline in lslam. Self-discipline is based on self-knowledge. A man must know all about himself. We must discipline ourselves thoroughly. We should try to remove the faults of our conduct. We should detect what is wrong and try to avoid it. Self-discipline implies the desire for self improvement, confession of weakness and resolution. A man of disciplined habits is loved and valued by everybody.

Discipline is taught in schools. A student’s work and play are regulated by his teachers. He is not allowed to break the discipline of the schools. A well disciplined life is a successful life and the student must master it for the sake of his career. A child is the father of the man. If we have to discipline man, he should be disciplined as a child.

Discipline is an inevitable condition in the army. It is maintained rigorously. A moment’s hesitation may bring about destruction. An ill disciplined regiment may bring defeat and shame to the whole nation.

Discipline is an essential condition for the growth of society and spread of civilization. It is wrong to say that discipline is the negation of individual liberty. Discipline does not mean iron rule. There are laws in every society. The individual forms a unit of society. The individual must follow those laws for the smooth working of society.

Games form a good example of discipline. On playfields, discipline is taught and maintained. The individual player must play the game not for himself but for the team. In the same manner, an individual in a society must follow the laws of society even if he has to sacrifice his own interest. A member of a society cannot be allowed to do whatever he likes. In all organizations, religions, political, economic, social or educational rules and regulations must be observed for the progress of the society. Importance of Commerce Education

 

Our education system is not working as properly as the developed countries of the world. Most of the students in our schools and colleges are not receiving a proper education. They are misdirected by the people who are not aware of the needs of the modern age. There is a basic disadvantage in our educational system. We are educating our students for useless knowledge. The simple education imparted in schools and colleges does not help the students in making their careers. They are unable to earn a decent living.

Europe and America are ruling the world just because of their advancement in education. Our government should understand the need of this age and should change the present educational system into a pragmatic, job oriented and specialized knowledge-based system. We must plan our Commerce Education system according to the needs of the international market. |The motive of Commerce Education should be to train such professionals who can work for the promotion of commerce and trade of the country. European nations realized the great advantages of Commerce Education therefore their industry and trade spread rapidly. They formulated a system of Commerce Education giving stress on professional skills and efficiency.

Only commerce Education can provide good business administrators and managers. The only way to compete with the international market is to improve our professional skills. Commerce as a subject should be promoted. A commerce graduate should be given priority over a simple graduate in the job market. Commerce has a vast variety in itself as it deals with Business, Banking, Accounting, Finance, Law, Income Tax, Business Statistics, and Business Communication.

A person having such knowledge in a profession can perform better than others. He can handle the professional problems more skillfully than a common man. Our government is still not playing its proper role to promote Commerce Education on modern grounds. But it is a matter of satisfaction that our private sector is very keen on this subject. They are updating the traditional approaches and adopting the latest techniques and methodologies to meet the challenges of the age. Practically the world has no geographical boundaries these days. Technological advancement has brought tremendous revolution in the fields of commerce and trade. Business is no more a native phenomenon.

Commerce and industry are directly related to each other. Our trade can only flourish if it has the right kind of professionals. Only Commerce education can produce specialists who can benefit our trade, industry, and economy. Our youth is very keen to learn and adopt this vast field. The prosperity of a country depends on its ability to trade with other countries.

It is hoped that the government will take important steps to establish a Commerce institution in every corner of the country. This is the only way to survive in this age of competition.

Illiteracy Problem

The first revelation on the Prophet Mohammad (P.B.U.H) aptly reveals the importance of the education. Education and civilization are broader in their sense and practice. They are co-relative. The nations which have a high rate of literacy progress rapidly and are now leaders in the world.

It is commonly observed that people who are educated have a better understanding of governance. They are prone to act on the principles more accurately than those who have no formal or informal education. Following the rules of principles ensures smooth flow of the affairs in any scarcity. On the other hand, illiterate persons or masses disturb peace and order as they do not follow the principles, rules and regulations prevalent in society.

An illiterate person has a limited thought and narrow canvas. He does not and cannot think beyond and a certain level. He is confined to his own interests and personal motives. He is unable to appreciate new aspects and possibilities. Illiteracy hinders his personal as well as collective growth.

An industrial worker who has the skill and has proper training in the related field can act for the good of himself and for his company. He is an efficient worker and can increase the production of that industrial concern. He is matchless in his performance. He works by using his skill and gains knowledge in a better way.

Illiteracy breeds crimes. People who are not educated do not have a clear idea of the importance of laws. They violate laws for their petty benefits. Illiteracy is the greatest threat to the integrity of a nation. Illiterate nations do not value their freedom. They involve in petty quarrels and disgrace their country.

There are many countries that have a high rate of literacy even though they have limited natural resources and low per capita income. They survive in the world with grace and dignity. So, it is the level of education and literacy that makes a nation powerful politically, technologically and economically.

Education should be free for all members of society. Incentives should be given to those who have some financial problems. A program of mass education can enhance the rate of literacy and wipe out the curse of illiteracy.

Ideology of Pakistan

Pakistan is an Islamic state. It came into being on 14th August 1947. It is different from many other countries of the world in one respect. It is an ideological state whereas most of the countries of the world are not so. Other countries of the world keep their people united on the basis of language, color and creed. But Pakistan is the only country where people are bound up by the ties of religion. For example, the people of Pakistan live in different provinces. They speak different languages. Their geographical and climatic conditions are also different. They have descended from different races. But Islam is the only force that has brought them together and keep them fully united. They have one common aim to live and work for the glory of Islam.

This, however, does not mean that Pakistan is a theocratic state in the narrow sense of the world. This is because Islam is completely different from other religions. It is not an ethical, ideal or moral code, but a complete system of life. It regulates man’s political, economic as well as spiritual life. Dr Iqbal has rightly said, “Isalm is a social structure, regulated by a legal system and animated by a specific ethical ideal.” Islam is a religion of this world and the other world else. It pays equal importance to the welfare of body and soul.

Islam is against the concept of nationalism. It does not allow the formation of any social order based on narrow nationalistic interests. It aims at uniting the whole humanity. It intends to set up a universal social order free from all considerations of race and geographical limits. Islam has a wonderful unifying force in itself. It can bind together individuals and groups of various castes, colors, races and countries.

Islam is such an ideology that is complete in itself. Its religious aspect is organically related to its practical or social aspect. It is against the spirit of this religion to restrict itself to mosques. In the economic life, Islam intends to create a society free from all types of exploitation. It lays great stress on the just distribution of wealth. It urges rich people to help the needy and the poor in time of need. In order to encourage just distribution of wealth, it has set up the system of “Zakat”. Zakat is an attempt to reduce poverty and finish the difference between the rich and the poor.

On the political side, the Quran says that full or absolute power belongs to ALLAH. So all governments or states become agents of the Supreme Ruler, ALLAH. As such, they have to obey the orders of Allah and frame their laws according to the Quran and Sunnah. Islam guides us about the duties of the government, criminal law, war and peace, taxation, business and the ownership of land. It lays great stress on the rights of neighbors. It guides us to be Socially good mannered, soft and well behaved. We can say with full confidence that Islam is a perfect religion and offers a solution to all our problems.

Fashion And Its Advantages & Disadvantages

A particular make, a shape, a style, or a pattern followed by most of the people may be called a fashion. It includes clothing, hairstyles furniture literature, jewellery and many other things.

The above cited quote is one of Matthew Arnold’s intellectual stances. Some people believe that life is not worth-living without fashion. Everybody wants to appear fashionable and stylish, and he spends lots of money on his hairstyle, beauty products, dress designing and shoes. Fashions go on changing. One fashion that is in today may be outdated tomorrow. Fashions have been in the world since the beginning of human civilization. The fashion industry is not a new thing in today’s world. Thousands and millions of people depend upon changing passions for their livelihood.

Fashions usually take their origin in the west. In Pakistan also, there are parties and social gatherings in which people try to outdo one another by their fashions and styles. From the west, these fashions reach the third-world countries. By the time people of the poor countries adopt these fashions, the westerns discard them and move on to the others, and thus the fashion industry goes on flourishing. Media has also contributed a lot towards fashions and fads. There are fashion shows, beauty contests and dress designing competitions in the form of catwalk shows. TV dramas especially soap serials on different channels like Star Plus. Movies and music shows have also triggered the fashion craze among the different classes of people which is a negative trend.

Fashions and styles make us look attractive and different from other people but, according to Aldous Huxley, it is our inner-self or soul that makes us beautiful or ugly. If we are bored, depressed or morally decayed, our outward appearance will do nothing but reflect our soul. It is actually the purity and beauty of our soul that makes our skin glow and our eyes shine. Fashions are then only a disguise or a cover that hides our reality and make us look attractive outwardly.

The craze of fashions is mostly found among women and youngsters. A visit to the college of today would indeed be an interesting experiment for those who wish to know something about the influence of fashion on men. Boys, as well as girls, spend much of their time on the toilet. Female students go two steps further. Fashion they regard as their special right. Girls have a natural and inborn love of pretty dresses and in college, they get a real opportunity. Girls spend a great deal of their money on powder, cream and lipsticks. Scents and perfumes are used by these Juilets to excite and stir their Romeos. Evidently, such boys and girls do not take their studies seriously. They may forget the formulas of mathematics but they don’t forget the names of the films. It is quite natural with women to beautify themselves. They should, however, give more importance to the purity of their soul than to their outward appearance. Beauty products, parlours, costly costumes and dandy shoes will not add to our attractiveness as much as do our peace of mind, contentment of our soul and spiritual happiness.

We should not, therefore, imitate the westerns or other people because the western culture and civilization are hollow and the people there are spiritually dead. I recall here the saying by a famous writer who says we may have a fashion of our own if we retain our naturalness, innocence, and purity of heart and soul.
